David Datuna was born in 1974 in Tbilisi, Georgia. He has lived in America since 1999 and frequently travels to Russia and Georgia.
Datuna’s art questions memory and perceptions, focusing on the underlying trigger points that cause a deep, internal recognition. Analysing and highlighting talismanic symbols such as national flags or the everyday objects that get overlooked, such as plates, David’s oeuvre aims to actively engage his spectators and create an emotional connection between them and the art.
Datuna latest works encompass a multitude of materials. The result is a combination of sculpture, painting and installation. The neon pieces encourage the spectator's eye to roam over them, demonstrating how perception is affected by the viewers’ physical relation to the pieces. Plates represent humanity, with its infinite variation of shapes, sizes and colours but with an underlying fragility, inherent familiar memories and imperfections. The works which incorporate spectacles offer a new persepctive on how we see art and society, examining the complex veil of perceptions and human reality beneath their jewel like, shiny surface.
